No Child... by Nilaja Sun
Directed by Jessica Lanius
Promenade Hall - Overture Center for the Arts
January 9-11, 2014
Theatre LILA officially made its debut in Madison with the production of No Child... and the correlating No Story Left Behind project. The pieces were performed in the Promenade Hall at the Overture Center for the Arts from January 9th to the 11th, 2014.
Nilaja Sun's award-winning play, No Child... —a tour-de-force exploration of challenges within the public school system—will be performed by Milwaukee actress Marti Gobel.
This fast-paced, one-woman play takes us on the emotional journey of Ms. Sun, a teaching artist and struggling actor who tries to inspire the “worst class” in New York City’s Malcolm X High School by casting them in a play. No Child... masterfully demonstrates the impact that one teacher can have, while delving into the broader complexities of the American education system.
The New York Times called the play, “~ marvelous. . .Touching and funny.” And The New Yorker pronounced No Child... “~ Astounding! (Playwright) Nilaja Sun provides an object lesson in what should not be missing from any life curriculum: hope!”
"Theatre LILA, one of Madison's newest theater troupes, received a hearty Wisconsin welcome for its production of No Child..."
